My hope is that my three kids will remember my error-filled stories with a chuckle.

I also hope they will have the courage to make good choices in their own financial journey. My errors are financial errors- there may have been legitimate reasons for me to act this way but they were not in my best interest financially. These financial mistakes are easy to avoid. I want to be careful with money but Im often so busy with day-to-day work and family schedules and do not make the time to invest in our financial success.

However, there are only a few areas where the right decisions can pay major dividends for future savings and earnings. I am sharing my financial mistakes and giving a few simple principles for major financial decisions. A few moves in the right direction could have kept me focused and allowed me to improve my money flow - and therefore can increase savings, retirement accounts as well as a familys financial security. (This book is a memoir and is for informational and entertainment purposes only- the content should not be mistaken for professional financial advice.

It is highly recommended that you seek advice from a professional for personal financial matters.)There are lots of things in life that do not involve the pursuit of money. Faith, love, integrity, commitment to family or a Vision larger than yourself make a lot of sense. Plus, career services professionals, those who advise others about potential careers always suggest pursuing careers that you like and are good at executing.

In other words, if I had followed a career path which only involved the pursuit of money, I would have been frustrated, unhappy and probably unsuccessful. I was not good at, and did not enjoy, programming computers or understanding the intricacies of financial markets. The United States is one of the richest countries in the world.

The current federal minimum wage is $7.25. Yet, millions and millions of people in the world live on less than $1 per day. How do they do it? These people are just trying to survive. Many have minimal needs and live in dwellings that one could hardly call houses but are still home for families. These people rarely have athletic programs, access to great literature or access to technology (though there is a program underway to place a minimized computer it the hands of every person on earth).

The United States does have all of these – there are many paths to wealth in this culture by the accidental/providential nature of one’s place of birth. Many people lead lives of giving rather than hoarding. Some give through religious organizations and others give through non-profits for causes they consider just like: hunger, peace, racial/gender justice or education. Shhh - give in secret so no one else knows. Some follow the adage: Live simply so others may simply live.
